When you look at her family tree, it should come as no surprise that Kia Nurse guided Ontario to gold on Saturday night.
The guard scored 17 points and added seven rebounds as Ontario thumped Quebec 76-59 in the Canadian girls’ under-15 basketball championship match at the University of Manitoba. Nurse also won gold with Ontario at last year’s tournament, which was held in Winnipeg as well.
“It’s amazing,” Nurse said. “Another gold medal and with the girls on our team, it’s just unreal.”
So is the athletic prowess in her family. Her dad, Richard, was a wide receiver for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Her mom, Cathy, starred for the McMaster Marauders women’s basketball team. Her older sister, Tamika, played basketball at the University of Oregon. Her older brother, Darnell, was recently drafted third overall by the Ontario Hockey League’s Soo Greyhounds.
If that’s not enough, the 15-year-old’s uncle, through marriage, just so happens to be Minnesota Vikings quarterback Donovan McNabb.
“He helps me,” said Nurse, who stands 6-feet tall. “He gives me advice on how to play and how to get to the higher level. It’s the same things my parents say to me: Work hard, and it always pays off.”.”
