Diogu, Aminu Help Nigeria basketball team earn historic first Olympic match.
By all accounts, Nigeria’s basketball team shouldn’t even be in the 2012 Olympics. But former Arizona State standout and NBA veteran Ike Diogu willed them here with an incredible performance in this year’s FIBA qualifying tournament that featured upset wins over Lithuania and Greece, as well as a 25-point, 10-rebound showing by Diogu in a win over the Dominican Republic that punched Nigeria’s ticket to the Olympics for the first time.
On Sunday, Diogu and Nigeria kept the Cinderella story rolling when D’Tigers won their first-ever Olympic game, beating Tunisia, 60-56. Diogu finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Former Georgia Tech star Alade Aminu (whose brother, Hornets forward Al-Farouq Aminu, also plays for Nigeria) had 15 points and nine rebounds.
