UNB Varsity Reds Stay Unbeaten Send X-Men to 0-2 Start At 2012 Eric Garland
Junior Forward Jordan Irvine (6-4, 205 lbs Riceville, NB) capped off a stellar night by burying a key jumper late in double overtime to lift the UNB Varsity Reds to a 110-107 victory over St. Francis Xavier X-Men at the 2012 Eric Garland Tournament.
UNB appeared to have the game wrapped in regulation but failed to capitalize at the foul line down the stretch as the X-Men went the length of the court off a missed foul shot and found Tyrell Vernon wide open on the left baseline for a questionable buzzer beating three-pointer that sent the game into the first of overtime.
Irvine finished the game with a team-high 31 points and game-high honors in the rebounding department with 16.
Fourth-year guard Daniel Quirion put forth a great all-around game with 22 points, five rebounds and six assists.
Tyrell Vernon had the hot hand for the shorted handed X-men with a game-high 34 points on 4-of-6 shooting from downtown. Vernon torched the Varsity Red back-court with consistent dribble penetration and added a game-high 7 assists.
Shane Coupland added a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds and Will Donkoh also reached double figures for ST. FX.
UNB (2-0) will take on the St. Mary Huskies also 2-0 in the tournament final.
Game Notes
UNB starting guard William McFee left the game in the first half and didn't return after sustaining an injury. The X-Men only dressed 9 players for the game and where without All-Canadian Terry Thomas.
