Halifax is also amongst the rising basketball cities in Canada, although, the city has yet to produce a current Canadian NBA player, its rich in basketball tradition mainly at CIS Basketball level (Canada's equivalent to the NCAA) with the hosting of the Final 8 (Canada's equivalent to MarchMadness).

The Raptors are returning to Halifax for the first time since 1997. They hosted pre-season tilts at the Metro Centre in each of their first three years and played the first game in franchise history in Halifax when they downed the Philadelphia 76ers 120-107 in an exhibition contest Oct. 14, 1995, in front of 9,367 fans.
