Julian Clarke: Top High School Basketball Performances That Were Tough To Beat

Julian Clarke, Oakwood. No. 24 on his jersey but it's really the number five that people will remember. The sensational Barons guard put up five three-point baskets in the final few minutes to give Oakwood a 47-34 win over St. Thomas More of Hamilton in the Ontario Quad-A basketball gold medal game. Let's see, those 15 points were the difference.

Duane Notice, St. Michael's. Alright, well he did serve notice early in the year that he was someone to watch. In 16 games, he scored 25 or more points. Well, at the Ontario playoffs, he had 28 points in a nine-point quarterfinal loss to Mother Teresa. Another 19 in a round robin win over St. Marguerite d'Youville and 23 points in a loss to Beal. Good player, trust me.

Kevin Pangos, Denison. This grade 11 kid is a good basketball player, but when people start comparing him to a young Steve Nash - please. Yes, he was the youngest player ever to dress for Canada's National Senior team. Same player who helped Canada win a bronze medal at the FIBA Americas under-17 playoffs last summer. He was very good at the Ontario playoffs, but no medals this year.

Adika Peter-McNeilly, Mother Teresa. He's a grade 11 guard on a team that won an Ontario silver medal last year in basketball and a bronze this year. Not bad at all. He scored 13 points in a 67-65 come-from-behind win over Vaughan of Thornhill to finish No. 3 in the province. He also had 26 points in a five-point semifinal loss to Oakwood. Yes, his team went undefeated in league play. That's 11-0.

SFU wears big target at CIS women's hoops championships

“How do we beat Simon Fraser?”

That's the question seven of the eight teams in this year's CIS women's basketball championships must be asking themselves in preparation for this weekend's tournament.

The Simon Fraser Clan is the top-ranked team in Canada and the defending champions. They are this year's Canada West champions, having steamrolled over the Regina Cougars 92-62 in the finals. They've won three of the last five championships and went 21-1 this year in regular-season and post-season play. The Clan has outscored its opponents by an average of 83-55 this season.

Why Pro Athletes Love Toronto

American pro athletes used to think of Toronto as a backwater. High taxes and low temperatures combined with a woeful lack of television exposure back in the States made playing here about as appealing as Canada's national dish of french fries soaked in gravy and cheese curds.

Athletes get a warm welcome at the city's relatively libertine gentlemen's clubs which, according to a spokeswoman for the Toronto Convention and Visitors Bureau, tend to "clear out the champagne room" for visiting athletes. And it helps that the tentacles of the tabloids and gossip Web sites rarely extend this far into the frozen north. "People like to come here to party," says Raptors power forward Chris Bosh.

Western Mustangs gain two junior national players

t's been barely a week since the Western Mustangs women's basketball team's season ended, but it's apparent coach Stephan Barrie abides by the rolling-stone-gathers-no-moss adage.

Barrie, who took a rebuilding team to an OUA West Division final, has already landed three high-profile recruits.

This as the Mustangs are still getting good news from this year's team. Guard Amanda Anderson has been nominated for the Nan Copp Trophy as the Canadian player of the year.

Included in the new players is Laura Dally from Sarnia, a six-foot guard with Canada's junior national team.

The Mustangs already have Jenny Vaughan waiting in the wings. Also a junior national team player, she sat out this year after transferring from Denver.

Is UConn's dominance bad for women's sports?

I don't mean to rain on UConn's parade, but how is it possible for one women's college basketball team to be so much better than the other 331 Division I teams -- especially during what should be the most competitive time in the history of women's sports?

Title IX is nearly 40 years old and more girls and women are playing sports than ever before, so what has happened to the balance in women's college hoops? Maryland's Brenda Frese, the last coach other than Geno Auriemma and Pat Summitt to win the NCAA title, believes these things run in "cycles" and that there just aren't as many great players in the college game as there were a few years ago.

Marion Jones signs deal with Tulsa Shock

Former Olympic sprinter Jones signs deal with Tulsa Shock: Marion Jones hasn't lost much of her swagger.

The disgraced sprinter once called the world's fastest woman was introduced Wednesday as the newest member of the WNBA's Tulsa Shock and she offered no apologies for her steroids use or her time in federal prison. She was poised and ready for questions about her troubled past.

"The word redemption is not in my vocabulary," Jones said at a news conference, flanked by team president Steve Swetoha and coach Nolan Richardson. "I'm a competitor, I want to play against the best in the world, and I know that I will be doing that."

Her bid for a new career comes a decade after she starred at the Sydney Olympics, winning gold in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 1,600-meter relay, and bronze in the long jump and 400-meter relay. She was stripped of all five medals after admitting in 2007 that she was using performance-enhancing drugs — a designer steroid called the "clear" — at the time of the games.

Jones also spent about six months in a Texas prison for lying to federal prosecutors about doping and her role in a check-fraud scam.

Capers relaxed, ready to go at women’s basketball championship

Western Canadian teams have won the last 18-straight Canadian Interuniversity Sport women’s basketball championships

And the Cape Breton University Capers figure it’s about time someone from the east broke that streak.

“Somebody’s eventually going to unseat them out of that place,” said Capers head coach Fabian McKenzie from Ontario, Wednesday. “We’re just hoping it’s us. It almost was us in 2006.”

The CBU women were defeated 56-53 by the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in the 2006 national championship game in Fredericton. They didn’t advance to the CIS final again until last year in Regina, where they fell 66-51 to the host Cougars in quarter-final play. The Capers ended up downing the Laval Rouge et Or 67-56 in the consolation final.
