Ajax's Pelley and Smith honoured by OCAA

Though the season ended on a sour note for the Durham Lords men's basketball team, a pair of postseason awards should help take away some of the sting.

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association recently announced Ajax resident Tyler Pelley captured the 2009-10 OCAA defensive player of the year award at the annual banquet, kicking off the provincial championships.

Pelley, known for his intensity on the court as much as anything else, led the OCAA with 90 steals this year, 36 more than Adrian Tomlinson of St. Lawrence who finished in second place.

The remarkable total gave Pelley the record for the most steals in a single season, passing the previous mark of 67 set in 2007-08. Steals have only been an official statistic of OCAA men's basketball for past three seasons.

With this year's whopping totals added to those he accumulated as a rookie last season, Pelley, a second-year guard with the Lords, has totalled a league-high 136 steals over the past two seasons. His per game average this season was an impressive 4.5.

Meanwhile, his Lords teammate Eric Smith, also of Ajax, was also honoured by the OCAA, earning East Region first team all-star status.

The sophomore forward was one of the league's top big men as he averaged an impressive 19.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, both team highs.

Fanshawe Falcons draw wild card, off to Canadian Colleges Basketball Championships

Second wild card or No. 8 seed, it makes no difference to the Fanshawe Falcons.

They're off to the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association men's basketball championship March 18-20 in Calgary.

It came down to a selection committee decision, but in the end the Falcons made the field on the basis they went 1-2 against Ontario champion Humber, the second seed at nationals, while Vancouver Island University went 0-3 against B.C. champion and national No.1 seed UNBC from Prince George.

Fanshawe and VIU never met his season and neither had played much out of province, meaning the third protocol was the deciding factor.

Humber Hawks Defeat Fanshawe Falcons In Men's OCAA Basketball Final

Not one player on the Fanshawe men’s basketball team is putting his gym bag away just yet.

The Falcons fell 59-48 to the Humber Hawks in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association hoops final Saturday at their own J-Gym.

But there’s a strong chance Fanshawe will still earn a wild card invite to the eight-team national championship tournament March 18-20 at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary.

“We think it’ll be decided Monday,” Falcons veteran Pat Wright said. “We have to wait until the other conferences are done. What I hear, we need the top team in Quebec to win and we’re in pretty good shape.

“The vets in the room have their head on straight. We know we have a good chance of getting there. It would’ve been nice to win it and go in as champs but it didn’t happen.

"We’ll go in as a little bit lower seed but that isn’t going to bother anyone.”

Fanshawe head coach Glenn Johnston said he’s no political animal, but historically, Ontario teams beat their Quebec counterparts something like “85% of the time” so it makes perfect sense for the OCAA to get one of the two available wild cards.

The St. Lawrence Vikings, a fit, fast, explosive engine that blew the doors off the opposition during the regular season then sputtered unnervingly near the end, seem to be firing on all cylinders again.

With impeccable timing -- the start of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men's basketball championship-- St. Lawrence thumped the Algoma Thunderbirds 68-52 Thursday at London's Fanshawe College.

The Vikes were full marks for the win, which puts them in Friday evening's semifinal against the winner of a game between Algonquin and Fanshawe late last night.
