Mohawk Mountaineers Crowned 2011-12 CCAA Men's National Basketball Champions

It was a dream finish for the Mohawk Mountaineers and for Aminu Bello’s varsity basketball career.

Bello’s five years of playing eligibility ended Saturday in Bible Hill, N.S. when Mohawk won its first-ever Canadian Colleges Athletic Association men’s basketball championship.

A 24-year-old hometown graduate of Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School and McMaster University, Bello scored 32 points and was selected player of the game as the Ontario champions from Hamilton defeated Calgary’s Mount Royal Cougars 88-73 for the gold medal. It was only the second national team championship banner ever for the Mountaineers – the other thanks to the men’s soccer team of 1989-90.

Mohawk entered the three-day, eight-team competition at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College as the fourth seed, while the Alberta champions were seeded No. 2. The Mountaineers, who were making their first-ever appearance at the national tournament, defeated all three of their opponents in convincing fashion.

“It’s a great capper to my varsity basketball career to win the CCAA championship,” said Bello, an All-Canadian shooting guard who was the Ontario West’s scoring leader during the regular season. “I wanted to play hard and leave it all on the floor. When I get it going, the basket seems like an ocean. Everything seems to drop.

Mohawk Mountaineers shoot for first Canadian college basketball title

The Mohawk Mountaineers will set out next week to reach new heights in men’s basketball.

Hamilton’s entry in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association is coming off a high of winning the league championship last weekend in Ottawa, for the first time since 1972.

Forty years ago, however, there was no next step — a tournament to decide a Canadian champion.

But coach Brian Jonker’s Mountaineers leave Tuesday for Truro, N.S. to compete in the 2011-12 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Tournament.

Mohawk is seeded fourth in the eight-team field. The first game for the Mountaineers is Thursday at 3 p.m. (Atlantic) against the Vanier Cheetahs of Montreal (5). Other teams, and their seedings, are: the UNBC Timberwolves of Prince George (1), Mount Royal Cougars of Calgary (2); Indiens d’Ahuntsic of Montreal (3), St. Thomas Tommies of Fredericton (6); MSVU Mystics of Halifax (7) and the Red Deer Kings of Calgary (8).
