Steve Atkin the right Coach OCAA Niagara Knights

The Niagara College Department of Intercollegiate Athletics are very pleased to announce and officially welcome Steve Atkin as Head Coach of the Niagara College Knights Men’s Basketball team. The Pelham resident and former member of the Canadian National team served as an Assistant Coach with the Knights for the past two seasons.

Atkin comes to Niagara College after experiencing great success at all levels along the way. At 6’ 10”, he had much success as a high school player where he had three consecutive runs at an OFSAA championship. He was recognized by the Canadian National Team while competing in high school and was a member of the National Team from 1978 to 1982. During that period the team was ranked fourth in the world. A former player at Simon Fraser University, University of Calgary, and the University of Waterloo, Atkin made three appearances at the CIS Championships. He competed in one World Championship, two World Student Games, two Pan-American Games, and once at the Commonwealth Games.

Atkin began his coaching career by building the Lakeshore Catholic High School Boys and Girls Basketball programs from inception. During his tenure, he took both programs to consecutive OFSAA appearances.

After spending thirteen years coaching high school, Atkin became the assistant coach at Brock University for the next eleven years. In 2002-2003, he guided Brock to a 17-16 record as interim head coach. His 17 victories set a new Brock record for most wins in a single season by a first year head coach. The Badgers finished ties for third place in the OUA Western region that season and defeated three of the top ten CIS ranked teams along the way.

J.P. Amaral goes out on a high

It seems fitting that J.P. Amaral studied electrical engineering at Georgian College.

Through five seasons with the Grizzlies varsity men's basketball team, the 23-year-old guard never hit a short circuit.

In fact, the Barrie native's energized, charged-up play was nothing but electrifying.

Amaral ranks second on the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association all-time career scoring list with a mind-boggling 1,526 points.

He averaged 20.6 points in his final season.

The four-time all-star and four-year Grizzlies team captain led the league with 100 free throws in his final campaign.

At Georgian's varsity athletic banquet at the Barrie campus on Thursday night, the lights were officially dimmed on Amaral's esteemed college career, but not before one final surge.

He was named the school's male athlete of the year.

Keenan Milburn helps SAIT Trojans to silver at CCAA finals

The SAIT Trojans almost stole a page from Virgil’s classic tale of the Trojan Horse when they hosted the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association men’s basketball championship, March 18-20 in Calgary.

The mythological horse caught the Trojans by surprise, and the SAIT Trojans did much the same to their opponents. Ranked No. 7 going into the eight-team tourney, the host Trojans knocked off No. 2-seed Humber Hawks of Etobicoke, Ont. 75-68 on Thursday and squeaked past No. 6 seed Champlain Cavaliers of St. Lambert, Que. 69-67 before bowing to No. 1 University of Northern British Columbia Northern Timberwolves 96-63 in Saturday’s final.

Third-year guard and co-captain Keenan Milburn of Royston was instrumental in getting the Trojans to the final and was named to the first all-star team.

Winning UNBC team could return in full

Seasons like this are tough to repeat.

The UNBC Northern Timberwolves’ men’s basketball team had an overall record of 25-1, including marks of 2-0 at provincials and 3-0 at nationals.

They collected seventeen wins in 18 regular-season games. But what sticks out most may be the overall 24-0 record since they lost their second game of the regular season, a 73-69 defeat to the Langara College Falcons in Vancouver.

Winning a second consecutive Canadian Colleges Athletic Association men’s basketball title may seem like a long shot. But consider the fact every member of this year’s national championship-winning squad is eligible to return, and the thought isn’t completely absurd or incomprehensible.

Dawson women win bronze at hoops nationals

A basketball team, it is often said, is only as good as its best player.

That’s what makes the Dawson College women’s team so special, because it is a team in the truest sense of the word – one that won the bronze medal last weekend at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association nationals in Kelowna, B.C.

It was the school’s first national medal in women’s basketball since 1986, and Williams was named national coach of the year for the first time in his 10-year career at Dawson.

After winning their second straight provincial title – defeating eventual national gold medallist Ste. Foy in the final – Williams says he and his team were disappointed to come home with a bronze. But he can see how far the program has come under his tutelage, and it brings a smile back to his face.

Trojans win squeaker against St-Lambert Cavaliers to earn berth in CCAA men's basketball final

As Simon Bibeau, who held the hottest hand on the gym floor, went up for a last-second jumper to tie the game, Mike Stevens was mentally preparing a speech.

“I was already trying to think of what I was going to tell the guys when that dropped,’’ smiled the SAIT Trojans’ head coach, weakly. “My heart was in my throat ‘cause it looked good from where I was standing.’’

But when the St-Lambert Cavalier – who had already popped in 29 points – missed the shot, the place erupted with the realization that, after 14 years, the Trojans would be making an appearance in the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association men’s basketball final.

The seventh-seeded Trojans, buoyed by some stellar team play, nipped the sixth-ranked St-Lambert Cavaliers 69-67 in their tournament semifinal at SAIT Campus Centre Gym on Saturday night. SAIT, which last won the nationals in 1986, will meet the University of Northern B.C. Timberwolves in the gold-medal final, which begins at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Champlain St-Lambert Cavaliers knock out NAIT Ooks

I f the first day of the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association men's basketball championship proved anything, it confirmed the adage is indeed true.

When you gather together the top eight teams in the country, it is anyone's ball game.

And if you can score and play a little defence, so much the better.

In a highly entertaining matchup on Thursday night, the sixth-seeded Champlain St-Lambert Cavaliers did a number on a high-powered offence out of Edmonton, downing the third-ranked NAIT Ooks 69-63.

"That was an unbelievable game,'' acknowledged St-Lambert coach John Dangelas. "They're really good. Every time we tried to pull away, they made the big shots.
