Upshaw appeared in all 20 regular season games for the X-Men, currently ranked No. 4 in the country, and scored 20 or more points on 11 occasions this year and broke the 30-point barrier twice. He is the school’s career leader in steals and third in assists and the first back to back MVP since Gabe Goree of Saint Mary’s

Expect a few upsets at AUS Final 6 tournament

THE AUS FINAL 6 has a new feel.

After almost three decades of operating exclusively from Halifax, one of the marquee events of the Nova Scotia sports year has been bumped to Sydney’s Centre 200 for this weekend’s championship play.

For everyone — players, coaches and fans — it will be a new experience.

Offensive-minded Cape Breton (18-2, first overall with 50 points) and annual contenders St. F.X. (also 18-2, second with 48 points) were the two regular season heavyweights. They fought an intense first-place battle over the second half, capped by two huge meetings late in the season. Cape Breton won the first match, 85-82 in Sydney. Then X won on its home court, 81-80.

Yet, in recent years, upsets have been common in the Final 6

SFU wears big target at CIS women's hoops championships

“How do we beat Simon Fraser?”

That's the question seven of the eight teams in this year's CIS women's basketball championships must be asking themselves in preparation for this weekend's tournament.

The Simon Fraser Clan is the top-ranked team in Canada and the defending champions. They are this year's Canada West champions, having steamrolled over the Regina Cougars 92-62 in the finals. They've won three of the last five championships and went 21-1 this year in regular-season and post-season play. The Clan has outscored its opponents by an average of 83-55 this season.

Western Mustangs gain two junior national players

t's been barely a week since the Western Mustangs women's basketball team's season ended, but it's apparent coach Stephan Barrie abides by the rolling-stone-gathers-no-moss adage.

Barrie, who took a rebuilding team to an OUA West Division final, has already landed three high-profile recruits.

This as the Mustangs are still getting good news from this year's team. Guard Amanda Anderson has been nominated for the Nan Copp Trophy as the Canadian player of the year.

Included in the new players is Laura Dally from Sarnia, a six-foot guard with Canada's junior national team.

The Mustangs already have Jenny Vaughan waiting in the wings. Also a junior national team player, she sat out this year after transferring from Denver.

Capers relaxed, ready to go at women’s basketball championship

Western Canadian teams have won the last 18-straight Canadian Interuniversity Sport women’s basketball championships

And the Cape Breton University Capers figure it’s about time someone from the east broke that streak.

“Somebody’s eventually going to unseat them out of that place,” said Capers head coach Fabian McKenzie from Ontario, Wednesday. “We’re just hoping it’s us. It almost was us in 2006.”

The CBU women were defeated 56-53 by the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in the 2006 national championship game in Fredericton. They didn’t advance to the CIS final again until last year in Regina, where they fell 66-51 to the host Cougars in quarter-final play. The Capers ended up downing the Laval Rouge et Or 67-56 in the consolation final.

McGill coach Craig Norman fired

The McGill Redmen had the Quebec conference's best player and finished third in the conference before losing out to the Laval Rouge et Or in the semi-final last weekend.

The loss apparently sealed the fate of head coach Craig Norman who the university announced did have his contract renewed.

"After considerable reflection, a decision has been made to seek new leadership within the men’s basketball program,” said McGill director of athletics Drew Love. “We appreciate the efforts that Craig has made during his six seasons as head coach and wish him well in his future endeavors."

Norman's tenure was not entirely successful. He was 64-122 in overall play with a 32-64 record in regular season play.

"Effective immediately we will begin a nation-wide search for a coach who will lead the program in a new direction consistent with the mission and culture of McGill University Athletics and Recreation," added Love.

Redemption was the rally cry heard Tuesday afternoon as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies prepared for the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) nationals this week at Hamilton, Ont., with one last practice in their home gym.

The Huskies -- seeded No. 3 for the tournament -- have the familiar prospect of possibly facing the same two teams they lost to a year ago in CIS nationals at Regina.
