UBC Thunderbirds drop preaseason game to Minnesota Gophers

A late summer look at the UBC Thunderbirds men's basketball team confirms the fact that they have the kind of talent that will serve them well on what looks to be another deep run into March at the CIS national championships.

The Thunderbirds team that dropped an 80-62 decision to the visiting Minnesota Golden Gophers on Thursday at War Gym did so not because of any lack of heart or hustle.

Simply put, the Gophers team that legendary head coach Tubby Smith is touring through the province this week, is big inside and adept at hitting big shots from the outside.

Smith rolled out a pair of 6-foot-11 players in Ralph Sampson and Elliott Eliason, as well as a pair of 6-foot-10 players in Colton Iverson and Scarborough, Ont.-native Mo Walker. With each averaging about 260 pounds, the beefy bunch made dribble penetration a near impossibility and also made it hard to fight through the half-court traffic and contest Minnesota's show-stopping display of three-point shooting.

Concussed star joins Mac cagers

Despite his unfortunate history of head injuries, the newest member of the McMaster Marauders basketball team has no qualms about wearing unlucky jersey No. 13.

Scott Brittain, of Oakville, has suffered six concussions during his hoops career, the past four years having been spent in the NCAA at Boston University.

He was a starter for 74 games with the Terriers -- averaging 8.4 points and 5.9 rebounds -- and graduated with a business management degree. At McMaster, the 6-foot-9, 240-pounder will be pursuing an MBA.

Lakehead Thunderwolves add Baltimore product Kemp McRae

The Baltimore basketball pipeline continues to land basketball prospects at Lakehead University.

On Friday the team announced the signing of post player Kemp McRae, a 2009 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School.

McRae, expected to come off the bench in his rookie CIS season, follows in the footsteps Lakehead’s all-time scoring leader Kiraan Posey, who escaped life on the mean streets of Baltimore to stage a stellar five-year career in Thunder Bay.
McRae, who spent last season in the workforce, said it’s a dream come true to play university basketball.

"I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to play for Lakehead and look forward to settling into my new environment – helping coach (Scott) Morrison and the team any way I can," McRae said in a release issued by the school’s athletic department.

The team also announced the arrival of Toronto’s Akeem Isaac, who spent the past two years developing his game south of the border.

McMaster Marauders land 6-9 forward Scott Brittain

No doubt some keen observers took note that 6-foot-9 Scott Brittain, a former Canadian junior national team member who sat out last season at Boston University due to concussion issues.

Lo and behold, it was just announced the Oakville, Ont., native, who started 74 games in three seasons for the Terriers in the mid-major America East conference, is coming to Mac. First-year coach Amos Connolly has also added 6-foot-1 combo guard Kenan Etale, who previously played at Houghton (N.Y.) College.

Brittain, 22, is an all-Canadian candidate if healthy. There's a high-risk, high-reward element due to the concussions, but his body of work at Boston U (he averaged 8.4 points, 5.7 rebounds in three seasons on 47% shooting) suggests it is worth taking a shot. There is also some thought the Marauders' highly touted young big, Taylor Black, should be able to tap into Brittain's experience.

Jamelle Barrett might be the missing piece to Saskatchewan Huskies

Following the Huskies men’s basketball first-ever national title in the spring, there was concern that the team’s large turnover of all-star players and the temporary absence of head coach Greg Jockims heading into the 2010 CIS season may hinder the team from repeating such a monumental feat.

Some of this concern has been alleviated by the arrival of the new recruit and point guard Jamelle Barrett.

Barrett is poised to fill the shoes of Showron Glover, a player largely responsible for helping bring home a trophy to the halls of the U of S in 2010. Glover opted to play the 2010-11 season overseas in Europe.

Carleton Ravens' big guns fall silent against Maine Black Bears

Call it déjà voodoo.

Perhaps someone somewhere is sticking pins in straw doll Carleton Ravens, particularly big guns Cole Hobin, Elliot Thompson and Mike Kenny, of whom so much is expected this season.

For the second consecutive games against an American opponent during the men's basketball exhibition season, the big guns were no-shows, the Ravens got off to a sluggish start and were uncharacteristically prone to turnovers.

The consequence?

An easy 73-62 victory for the Maine Black Bears yesterday at the Raven's Nest.

Brandon Bobcats add 6-8 California forward Isaiah James

Brandon University men’s basketball coach Gil Cheung has added his second recruit for the 2010-2011 season. Isaiah James, a 6’8” forward from San Jose, California, will hit the court for the Bobcats this fall.
“Isaiah fills our biggest need on and off the court. He is an extremely active scorer, rebounder and shot blocker, who will be able to anchor our pressure on the defensive end,” said Cheung. “He is also a great fit for us in the classroom as he comes to us with a 3.2GPA and is a leader with great character as well. I know he will be a fan favorite with his style of play. He is a high-flyer and is able to finish above the rim.”
