Little-known Elfrid Payton emerges as the surprise of USA Basketball U19 Tryouts

The most surprising player to earn a spot on the U.S. U-19 team Monday night needed a late plea from his head coach just to earn the chance.

Louisiana-Lafayette's Elfrid Payton wasn't on USA Basketball's radar as recently as a few weeks ago when Ragin Cajuns coach Bob Marlin dialed Billy Donovan and urged him to consider inviting the 6-foot-3 rising junior to tryouts.

The 12 members of the U.S. U-19 World Championship team

"I told him, 'I don't sell my guys but Elfrid is really good and might be able to help,'" Marlin said. "I told him he could call Richard Pitino or Tom Izzo because Elfrid really played well against both their teams. He said, 'I don't need to call those guys. You and I have known each other a long time. If you say he's good enough, he's good enough.'"

2013 Canadian Junior Men's National Team Roster Finalized + Players Analysis & More

Toronto, ON - (BasketballBuzz) - Head Coach Roy Rana and his staff have announced the names of the final twelve young Canadians that will be tasked with the responsibility of bringing home a medal at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic.

Led by 2014 Top prospect Trey Lyles and Syracuse Orange Freshmen Tyler Ennis the 2013 Canadian Junior Men's National team has the potential to come out of a tough Group A, where it will play Spain, Korea, Croatia and potentially challenge for a medal.

The finalized roster is well rounded with talent at point guard position, multiple options on the wing that can attack, shoot it and get at it defensively. The forwards offer up an interchangeable group that features enough finesse, athleticism and raw talent to clean up the boards and compete with world's more experienced teams.

You would be hard pressed to find a better staff to lead this group. Head Coach Roy Rana is amongst, if not the hottest coach in Canada right now, with his Ryerson Rams (CIS) program on the rise, including, his vast and growing international experience theres little doubt that he is the right man for the job.

Assisting Rana will be Jamie McNeilly, Student-Athlete Development Specialist at Marquette University and Scott Morrisonof the 2013 CIS Men's Basketball semi-finalist, Lakehead Thunderwolves. Mentoring this extremely talent group of young coaches is Steve Kolchalski, Canada's Coach "K" and former Head Coach of the Senior Men's National Team.

Below is an individual look at each member of the roster, broken down by their respective positions and with some additional insights.

2013 Canadian Junior Men’s National Team Final Roster

Point Guards

Tyler Ennis - (Guard/6-2, 180lbs, Brampton, ON - Freshmen, Syracuse Orange)
Pure point guard with natural instincts, Ennis has played at the highest level of American High School basketball and has been throwing lobs to Andrew Wiggins for the past two years on the AAU circuit. Solid rebounder with the necesary vision to find the open man on the break or take it to the tin for tough baskets.

Kaza Keane - (Guard/6-2, 185lbs, Ajax, ON - Sophomore, Illinois State Redbirds)
Keane will be the first logical choice off the bench to replace Ennis at the point guard spot. Keane comes from basketball family and his natural flair for the game and a pass first mentality is evident. Look for Keane to run the offense when Ennis is out or in foul trouble. Solid PG who will play more minutes this upcoming season with the Redbirds.

Guards

Duane Notice - (Guard/6-3, 195lbs, Woodbridge, ON - Freshmen, South Carolina Gamecocks)
Proven player at all levels of play. Tremendous energy with the ability to impact the game on the defensive side of the ball. Notice was the MVP of the Red & White game with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Xavier Rathan-Mayes - (Wing/6-4, 180lbs, Scarborough, ON - Freshmen, Florida State Seminoles)
Rathan-Mayes is a volume shooter that can change the outcome of a game with his shooting, leave him open and he will knock it down, eventually. Like Tyler Ennis, Rathan-Mayes has gone against the best in the AAU circuit and played alongside Wiggins at Huntington Prep in West Virginia.

Manroop Clair - (Guard/6-2,170lbs, Vancouver, BC - Sophomore, Seattle RedHawks)
The best pure shooter on the roster, Clair is the only west coast selection and will be called upon to shoot the ball, where his unlimited range could be a key asset in the international game. Needs to improve physically and show more commitment on the defensive end, but overall, a guy like Clair is a must for this type of competition.

Wings

Joe De Ciman - (Wing/6-5, 190lbs, Regina, SK - Sophomore, Colorado State Rams)
A physical specimen of the Wing, De Ciman should challenge for a starting spot, and should be in mix and play a significant role on the wing, specially when Coach Rona decides to go to a smaller defensive oriented united unit. De Ciman was amongst the standouts in the Red & White Game12 points and five rebounds.

Mikyle McIntosh - (Wing/6-6, 230lbs, Pickering, ON - Freshmen - Illinois State Redbirds)
Talented wing player who loves to get to the rim and is not afraid of contact. McIntosh will most likely have to show his improved shooting touch against FIBA rules and could be a solid contributor for the Canadians specially against less athletic teams in the preliminary rounds.

Forwards

Trey Lyles - (Forward/6-10, 210lbs, Saskatoon, SK - Senior, Arsenal Technical HS)
Mr. Indiana basketball player of the year in 2012 will anchor the Canadians both inside and out. Lyles is currently one of the most highly recuited players in the Class of 2014, and for good reason. At 6-10 he has the finesse to hit the mid-range jumper and has the athleticism to get to rack from the elbow as well. Put up 13 points and 9 rebounds in scrimmage and was right up there with the best players in the world at the U18 championships where he and Wiggins help Canada qualify for the event.

Denzell Taylor - (Forward/6-9, 215lbs, Brampton, ON - Freshmen, Old Dominion Monarchs)
Hardworking forward who quietly goes about his business. Taylor fits in nicely with this group and will counted upon to active on of both ends. of the floor.

Agunwa Okolie - (Foward/6-8, 205lbs, Ajax, ON - Sophomore, Harvard Crimison Tide)
Okolie played sparingly for Harvard during his freshmen season and will look to take his NCAA March Madness experience and high basketball IQ to Prague in hopes that it will pay dividends for Canada. Great shot blocking ability for his size.

Marko Pirovic - (Forward/6-7, 215 lbs, Bolton, ON - Freshmen, Maine Blackbears)
Pirovic has the ability to knock down the outside shot which will be key for a Canada as they space the floor and allow Lyles to operate inside. The Maine BlackBears freshmen can also contribute on the glass thanks to his wide frame but will be in a tough battle for minutes at the forward position.

Chris Egi - (Foward/6-8, 205lbs, Markham, ON - Junior, St. Andrews College, HS)
The youngest selection, at only 15-years of age Chris Egi wont just be going to these games to watch. Egi is raw, as expected, specially for his age, but plays with hunger and intensity which will earn him the opportunity to further develop his skills and cash in on a few more NCAA scholarship offers.

Potential Starters
PG - Tyler Ennis
SG - Xavier Rathan Mayes
SF - Duane Notice
PF - Mikyle MacIntosh
C - Trey Lyles

2013 FIBA U19 World Championship Schedule
Canada opens up the championships against Spain on June 27th, Croatia on the 28th & Korea on the 29th.

Surprises
No CIS representation?

Does this clearly state that Canadian University players aren't good enough to play at this level? Specially when you have two countries top Canadian University coaches making the calls?

With all the NCAA Canadian talent in the pipeline, will we ever see a CIS player on the Canadian Junior National Team?

A closer look at 2013 CIS Men's Basketball Freshmen list reveals only two names which perhaps would at the very least warrant an invite, Shaquille Keith (13.3 points 3.3 assists/Cape Breton Capers) & 2013 Freshmen of the Year, Deontay Smith who averaged 17.7 rebounds, 7 rebounds and 4.4 assists for the UPEI Panthers.

Regardless, if they we were both invited to training camp they wouldn't wouldn't have made the team. Specially when you have Andrew Wigginsopting to not to play and 2013 ACC Freshmen of the Year Olivier Hanlan also not in the mix.

Overall Thoughts
Canada will need a top three finish in Group A in order to advance to quarter-finals. In order to accomplish this it will most likely need to beat Spain and/or Croatia. The game against Korea won't be easy but should go Canada's way. The keys for the Canadians will be how well they control the defensive boards and their limitation to turnovers. Outside shooting will definitely be a deciding factor as well.

Mothers of Joel Anthony, Cory Joseph on sons’ rise to NBA Finals

Two Canadians in the NBA finals?

Yes, Cory Joseph (San Antonio Spurs) & Joel Anthony (Miami Heat).

One from Pickering, ON, the other from Montreal, QC.

The mothers of both Anthony and Joseph spoke to National Post basketball reporter Eric Koreen from San Antonio this week about their sons’ paths to the periphery of basketball’s biggest stage.

“The celebration [after last year’s championship] was all night long. It was just wonderful. The energy was just phenomenal … I have a photograph with myself and Joel holding the [Larry O'Brien] Trophy. We went to the owner’s office to get that photograph taken.

“My favourite memory? I know one of the most exciting ones was when I wasn’t at the game. But I had a bunch of family and friends over to watch when Texas was playing North Carolina. That shot that he hit, it was crazy in the house. It was great.

Toronto Raptors Part Ways With Fan Favorite Alvin Williams

The organizational shaked down in T.O continues with with the Toronto Raptors deciding to fire former point guard, turned scout, and fan favorite Alvin Williams.

Yep, the chief executive officer of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment — on the job for less than a month — has jettisoned one of the great guys ever associated with the franchise and a man who wanted nothing more than to spend his entire career with the organization in some way, shape or form.

Williams had spent last season scouting for the team, based out of Philadelphia, but he was far, far more than just an employee picking up a cheque.

He loved the organization and the city, he was a link to some of the best times the team has ever had, he is a great guy who’d show up every now and then and sooth some antsy players, offer a unique perspective and be a valued confidant to many.

Fired. Not by the general manager who never spoke to him, but by a CEO who seems hellbent on getting his fingers in every decision at some level.

It sucks.

Marketing Done Right: Jay-Z & Samsung Set Social Media A Blaze (VIDEO)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B--ZARCwSIE

For many years brands have been afraid to tap into the power and influence of the Hip-Hop culture, it's marriage with the game of basketball and its overall influence.

If you know basketball, then you probably know Jay-Z, and when it comes to Electronics you probably currently own or previously owned a Samsung product.

Now, tie the two together and mix it all up by dropping a three minute bombshell commercial just as half-time hit of a must watch Game 5 of the 2013 NBA Final series between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat.

The result?

"Instant Buzz" across social media channels.

The purpose of the commercial really didn't set until the 1:00 mark, which left many wondering what that hell was going one.

Everything clicked when Jay-Z aka the Jigga man uttered the words "We put the album out on July 4th."

Brilliant!

"Magna Carta Holy Grail" - Jay-Z's twelve studio album and will drop on the Fourth of July, The USA's most memorable day, Independence Day.

In and era where the old rules no longer apply brands, artists have to be creative to create buzz and stand out as Jay-Z himself stated:

"We don't have any rules, everybody is trying to figure it out," he says. "That's why the internet is like the Wild West. The Wild Wild West. We need to write the new rules."

The video features some of the heavyweight producers (Rick Rubin, Timberland, Swizz Beats & artist Pharrell Williams) in the game as they showcase the creative process of putting together Shawn Carter's latest effort.

As part of the deal Samsung will provide one million Galaxy S3, S4 and Note owners with a free copy of the album 72 hours ahead of its scheduled released date, as long as they download a custom app which allows them exclusive access into the making of Magna Carta.

The deal makes sense for both parties. Jay-z moves a million copies at 5 dollars apiece even before the album drops.

Samsung now has the top heavyweight influencer in the music biz and paired with his recent investments in the Brooklyn Nets and the opening of RocNation sports agency they will continue to grab market share of the growing mobile & tablet space which was once dominated by Apple.

Canadian Jabari Craig 6'11 PF, Class 2014 Spring Mixtape (VIDEO)

Nice little mix on rising Canadian Big men Jabari Craig (Toronto, ON)

Most Canadians basketball fans finally got a chance to see Craig at the 2013 RED & White where the 6'11 power forward showed his raw ability, battled hard down lown and ran the floor extremely well.

Craig finished with 3 points and four rebounds and blocked shot.

The spring Mixtape shows Craig in the AAU circut with Toronto's Northern Kings program. Blocked shots, Dunks, Soft touch and face up game?

2013 Class of FIBA Hall of Fame: Profile of Canadian Jack Donohue

John "Jack" Donohue took Canadian basketball to new heights.

He was the long serving coach of the men's national team, from 1972 to 1988.

A native New Yorker, Donohue is best known in international basketball for steering Canada to their finest moments on the court.

Put in charge in 1972, he helped turn the side into a force.

At the Montreal Games in 1976, Donohue steered a Canadian squad that had players like Phil Tollestrup, Bill Robinson, Lars Hansen, James Russell and Martin Riley to a fourth-place finish.

One year after guiding Canada to gold-medal glory when they hosted the 1983 World University Games in Edmonton, Donohue returned to the Olympic field with his country in Los Angeles and the side that had Jay Triano finished fourth.

Donohue's last time at the helm was in 1988 at the Olympics in Seoul, where Canada came in sixth.

Four years later and he was enshrined in the Canada Basketball Hall of Fame.

He is also in the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, the Canada Sports Hall of Fame, the Ontario Basketball Hall of Fame, the New York Basketball Hall of Fame and the Terry Fox Hall of Fame.

Even before his time with Canada, Donohue had made an indelible imprint on the sport.

The Brampton NBA Connection: Tristan Thompson & Anthony Bennett

The comparisons between Cavaliers power forward Tristan Thompson and UNLV power forward Anthony Bennett are unavoidable.

Both grew up in Brampton, Ontario. Both started their basketball careers in Brampton, transferred to U.S. prep schools out East and finished up at Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev. Both spent one year in college before declaring for the NBA draft and, if current projections hold, both could wind up as No. 4 picks.

They even were born two years and one day apart. Thompson's birth date is March 13, 1991, and Bennett's is March 14, 1993.

"I'm looking forward to playing against him next year,'' Bennett said of Thompson after the Cavs won the 2013 draft lottery last week.

Bennett was a guest of the NBA during the lottery and realized he likely wouldn't be the No. 1 pick in the draft. But his stock is holding steady despite left rotator cuff surgery in early May that prevents him from taking part in any workouts before the NBA draft on June 27.

Nike generated $300 million in U.S. retail sales in 2012 for James’ signature shoes, according to research firm SportsOneSource. Nike’s haul represents a 50% increase from sales of James’ kicks in 2011. “The first thing is the aesthetics. The shoes look great and his star stature continues to rise,” says SportsOneSource analyst Matt Powell. “The media attention on him helps him sell more footwear.”

A quick update on Carmelo Anthony

Since we posted about Carmelo Anthony, Stephen Curry, and Pistol Pete, Melo has continued to miss a very large amount of shots at an alarming rate. At the moment, Anthony has taken over 30 field goal attempts (FGA) per 48 minutes played during this year's playoffs. This feat has only been accomplished 14 times, and Melo's performance is the second worst in terms of effective field goal percentage (eFG%):
