The men’s basketball team announced Monday the addition of Brian Ofori, who played the past three seasons with Montreal’s Dawson College.

“He was a rebounding, defensive presence, a shot blocker,” said Panthers coach Tim Kendrick.

He expects the six-foot-five forward to fill the same type of role initially with UPEI but sees room for improvement and growth in his game.

“His upside is sky high,” Kendrick said. “His skills need improvement, but his physical athletic ability is off the chart.”

Kendrick said he could be an all-Canadian by the time he completes his five years in Charlottetown. He likes his work ethic, attitude and character.

UPEI men’s basketball coach Tim Kendrick also says he likes the idea of there being regulations in place, but said the CCAA regulations are a bit tight.

“I like the idea of a number but the number seems a bit low.”

He said it’s time for the CIS and CCAA to work together on these types of regulations.

“If there’s going to be a rule, it should be the same across the board. Just to make it more concrete and structured.”

FX For Second Straight Loss" alt="UPEI Panthers 100-76 Blow Out Short-Handed ST. FX For Second Straight Loss">
The UPEI Panthers showed no mercy on a short-handed ST.FX team by blasting the #2 team in the country 100-76 on Sunday at the Chi Wan Young Sports Centre.

The victory snaps the Panthers three-game losing streak and moves UPEI to 7-3, good for second-place in the competitive AUS conference.

The X-men have now lost two straight games and were limited to only seven players as Head Coach Steve Konchalski suspended seven players including leading scorer Terry Thomas for disciplinary reasons and team violations.

“They went out on a night three days before the game, and that’s against team rules,” said St. F.X. head coach Steve Konchalski, now in his 37th season. “We have a team rule that says within three days of a game, you’re not allowed to go out. You’re not allowed to go out to a pub. You’re not allowed to go anywhere.”

All of the Panthers starting line-up reached double-figures, paced by Manock Lual with 22 points and nine rebounds, including three deep balls. Terrance Brown was 4-of-7 from downtown finishing with 20 points, dished out seven assists and four rebounds.

Jeremy Dunn and Will Donkoh played all 40 minutes for the X-men with Dunn finishing with 24 points, six rebounds, and Donkoh added 22 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
