OPP Const. Aaron McPhail said Melnik received a speeding ticket, and a ticket for not having the proper licence to transport more than 10 passengers.

Two students were taken in a police cruiser to a nearby OPP detachment, where Melnik met them with his van, and “other arrangements” were made for the safe transportation of the team, said McPhail.

Melnick refused to discuss the incident when reached by phone Tuesday.

“What am I going to say?” Melnik said, still in Windsor for the championships.

“I dispute it all,” he said. “Whatever I say it’s going to be misconstrued.”

Melnik, who earned his Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto in 1996, coaches arguably one of the best teams in the province.

In the midst of the bodies, the voice of an unseen player offered up these words:

“We can’t play any worse,” was the phrase he opted to bellow at his teammates, not exactly the sort of thing they teach during a Dale Carnegie course.

You know what?

It almost worked.

An improbable Windsor rally fell one point short, as the Oshawa Power hung on for an 84-83 decision in Saturday’s National Basketball League game at the WFCU Centre.

Greg Surmacz a former CIS Basketball All-Canadian has decided to bring his talent from Poland to back his original collegiate roots.

Observers will see "more of a complete player" in a post-CIS Surmacz.

"I dribble more, I pass more," he said.

"I'm more cerebral and fundamentally so much better."

Express coach Bill Jones said Surmacz has been "very impressive."

While training camp just opened Sunday in Windsor, the Express have conducted workouts in the Detroit area over the past few weeks.

"He's demonstrated a high skill level," Jones said. "He shoots the ball, he defends well and he's a smart guy. He'll be competing for one of our starting positions at forward."
