Andrew Wiggins: Future Canadian Basketball Star

With so many dope articles about Andrew Wiggins here is one that had some strong points in relationship to the impact Wiggins will have on the next generation of Canadian basketball players and the landscape of the game up North.

How many of you can name a Canadian born athlete who would right now go down in the history books as one of the best? Neither one of you can because it never happened. I don’t want to put too much pressure on Wiggins but when he does enter the NBA next year, he’ll have an enormous impact on the game itself.

“We’re heading to a place when we will have to cut NBA players for the national team,” Parrish says. “And hopefully the bond is so strong that they’ll get it.”

Canada needs basketball back. We need it to be recognized internationally and be known for our love of the game. Investors need to realize the opportunity and potential there is in the Canadian basketball program.

As one commenter put it,

“Basketball was invented by a Canadian. Time to bring it back to the north.

Plans To Make Edmonton City The Basketball Capital of Canada Scaled Back

A proposal adopted last year would have seen Canada Basketball train nine of its 10 teams full-time at the Saville Community Sports Centre on the University of Alberta’s South Campus.

The men’s senior team, under general manager and National Basketball Association star Steve Nash, would have used Edmonton as a part-time base.

But the province has decided not to provide the $1.9 million requested for 2013, so the plan will now involve having only the senior women’s team permanently located in Edmonton, according to a report released Wednesday.

Canada's 2020 Basketball Operation

By 2020, Canada could have a team with Olynyk, Thompson and Nicholson upfront, Wiggins and Bennett on the wings and Kabongo running point. Even if some of them don’t pan out, with so much interest in basketball in Canada, the country’s pipeline of talent won’t run out as abruptly as it did in Argentina. There’s already one Canadian, a 6’8 210 forward named Trey Lyles, among the top players in the class of 2014. For all of them, the biggest game of their careers may end up being a match-up with Team USA in the 2020 gold medal game. The future of basketball, both in Canada and around the world, is bright indeed.

Steve Nash talks tough season with Lakers, Looking Forward To role with Canada Basketball

By now everybody knows the Lakers struggles. Steve Nash took the time to sit down and discuss what's wrong in L.A and how then can improve.

Canada's greatest basketball player...also chatted briefly about the Canadian Senior Men's national team including the upcoming 2013 FIBA Americas competition which will serve as the qualifier for the 2014 World Cup for Basketball.
ooking ahead to this summer and the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship, which serves as a qualifier for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, Nash outlines his vision of what he can contribute to the cause.

"I'll be there for part of the FIBA Americas Championship and for part of the camp," he points out.

"My role has been about implementing a vision and putting together a team to work towards that. And then on top of that trying to develop relationships with the players so that they feel a sense of family and support and a place where they can really develop on top of an opportunity to compete for their country.

"Regardless of the up-and-down season in the NBA, I'm thrilled to be a part of it and thrilled with our young players. At all age groups we've got players that are world class and it's really exciting."

With a crop of talented junior players - including the likes of Andrew Wiggins, Kevin Pangos, Kelly Olynyk and Justin Jackson - working their way up the ladder, Canada has a lot to look forward to.

As a result of that, Nash is calling for Canada Basketball to reach out to players as early as possible.

"It's a hollistic view. We have to think of getting our hands on our young players at 12 or even before if possible and start to give them a system and a structure and identification so all the age groups are important," he said.

"But obviously the older they get, the more visibility they're going to get and the more you're going to see them.

"There is a tremendous amount of talent and it's up to us to develop it and to put it into a team."

Carl English not ready to pass torch to Canada’s rising basketball stars just yet

English is having a career year in the Spanish league and is reminding everybody that its his spot to lose when the Canadian Senior team gets together.

English has been all but forgotten in his homeland, lost in the shuffle of Canada’s rising stars: Bennett with UNLV deemed by some to be the top freshman in the NCAA this season, Wiggins as the potential No. 1 overall NBA draft pick in two years, and solid seasons from Orlando Magic centre Andrew Nicholson and Cleveland Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson.

English’s road from St. John’s to leading the best basketball league outside of the NBA in scoring has been quite the journey.

English is leading the Spanish league (Asociacion de Clubs de Baloncesto), arguably the second-best league in the world, in scoring at 18.5 points per game, nearly 1.4 points better than the next best scorer.

The Surge of Canadian Basketball

But why is Canada all of a sudden becoming a hotbed for hoops talent? Is this the result of kids growing up idolizing Steve Nash? Yao Ming made a major impact in the NBA and caused basketball hysteria in his home country of China. Maybe that happened below the radar in Canada over the past decade of Nash’s career. Whatever is causing the production of talent north of the border, I hope it doesn’t stop because it is good for the game to have stars from a variety of backgrounds.

Ginobli has not ruled playing in the Basketball World Cup if the Argentinians qualify.
