Mothers of Joel Anthony, Cory Joseph on sons’ rise to NBA Finals

Two Canadians in the NBA finals?

Yes, Cory Joseph (San Antonio Spurs) & Joel Anthony (Miami Heat).

One from Pickering, ON, the other from Montreal, QC.

The mothers of both Anthony and Joseph spoke to National Post basketball reporter Eric Koreen from San Antonio this week about their sons’ paths to the periphery of basketball’s biggest stage.

“The celebration [after last year’s championship] was all night long. It was just wonderful. The energy was just phenomenal … I have a photograph with myself and Joel holding the [Larry O'Brien] Trophy. We went to the owner’s office to get that photograph taken.

“My favourite memory? I know one of the most exciting ones was when I wasn’t at the game. But I had a bunch of family and friends over to watch when Texas was playing North Carolina. That shot that he hit, it was crazy in the house. It was great.

2013 NBA Finals: LeBron, Wade Show remind Spurs how devastating duo can be

It was an epic performance by LeBron James and Dwayne Wade and the Miami Heat. Staring them in the face was the potential of a 3-1 series hole against the San Antonio Spurs.

LeBron James who struggle mightily through the first three-games of the series responded with game-high 33 points and 11 rebounds to even the series at 2-2.

Dwayne Wade also written off my many erupted for a vintage 32 points in the crucial game.

"Tonight," Shane Battier said, "was a Big Three night."

Mostly, it was a Big Two night. The LeBron and D-Wade Show makes worthy opponents seem irrelevant. It makes them look silly. James and Wade combined for 65 points on 50 shots. They had 24 rebounds -- more than the entire San Antonio starting five. They had eight steals, three blocks and one turnover.

Wade looked like one of the five best players in the world, not the hobbled man he has been lately. ("Of course he's hurting," James said. "He's been playing with a bum knee all year.") Wade was all over the floor, stealing passes, contorting for layups and looking healthier than he is.

The message on the giant video screen at the Barclays Center said it all: "Hello Coach! J. Kidd Back Where He Belongs."

"I'm a rookie," said Kidd, officially hired on Wednesday night. "I go from being one of the oldest players in the league to now a rookie coach. I'm very excited about the challenge. I think being here in Brooklyn we have a special opportunity to achieve that status as to being a championship-type-caliber team, and I'm looking forward to being part of that, helping with the structure and sharing things I [brought to the table] as a player such as being unselfish, communicating and being tough, and hopefully I can get that across to the guys."

Kidd, 40, is just 10 days removed from announcing his retirement as a player. According to a league source, he signed a three-year contract with a team option for a fourth year.

Spurs' ordinary Joe makes extraordinary call

Feel good story from Spurs Guard Cory Joseph has done a solid job backing up Tony Parker.

Joseph finds himself in great situation, in only his second year and hes playing for a change at a NBA championships.

The article so focus on Joseph development over in the D-League and how it allowed him learn the game instead of just sitting on the sideline.

It was late-January and Popovich’s club had lost just seven games in the span of two months — business as usual for basketball’s gold-standard franchise. Joseph had been back and forth between the club and its D-League affiliate in nearby Austin, Texas, and though he cherished the experience learning under Pop and the Spurs core of future Hall of Famers, he was spending more and more time on the bench, averaging just over six minutes in the little playing time he was afforded.

“I really wasn’t playing at the time,” Joseph recalls after practice during the Finals, where the Spurs are currently tied 1-1 with the Miami Heat. “I was still travelling with the team, and I’d get a little 3-on-3 or 1-on-1 in during practice, but I felt like my conditioning was going down. I was coming in to workout, but it’s just not the same as a game.”

He had rehearsed the line over and over in his head, and when he dialed Popovich’s number and his coach answered the phone, Joseph didn’t hesitate: “I want to go back to the D-League.”

There was a pause on the other end as the coach processed the request, a rare self-demotion of sorts, from one of the most-coveted positions in the NBA — from a spot on the San Antonio Spurs bench to what amounts to the uncertainty of basketball’s minor league.

How the NBA doubled basketball engagement levels in Canada with only one team

Really interesting interview with Dan Mackenzie, vice-president and general manager of NBA Canada looking how the NBA has been able to grow its footprint in Canada using similar strategies from around the globe.

Since 2008, the National Basketball Association‘s (NBA) revenue has grown 224% in Canada — one-third of which can be attributed to new Canadians who come from basketball-loving nations in Asia, and two-thirds of which have been drawn in by the NBA’s marketing strategy. Dan Mackenzie, vice-president and general manager of NBA Canada, recently spoke with FP’s Dan Ovsey about how the NBA plans to continue attracting newcomers, how it will implement learning from experiences in international markets, and how it has achieved high engagement levels among Canadians in markets where no basketball team exists (i.e. all markets outside Toronto). Following is an edited transcript of their conversation.

Indiana Pacers took game six of the 2013 Eastern Conference Finals in a commanding fashion. Their 91-77 victory tied the series at 3-3 forcing a decisive game seven.

Roy Hibbert once again dominated the Heat inside on his way to 24 points, 11 rebounds and a block.

During the post game interview Hibbert got a little excited and put himself and the entire Pacers organization in jeopardy of not having him available for game 7 by dropping a gay slur "NoHomo" and calling reporter a bunch of "motherf -----ers", when was asked why and how he finished tenth in the the 2013 NBA Defensive list.

"Y'all m------------- don't watch us play throughout the year to tell you the truth," Hibbert said. "So that's fine. I'm going to be real with you, and I don't care if I get fined. We play and we're not on TV all of the time and reporters are the ones that are voting and it is what it is. And I don't make it, that's fine. I'm still going to do what I have to do."
