Nirra Fields drops 36 points as Canada falls to Japan at 2010 U17 women’s basketball worlds

Nirra Fields of Lachine, Que., shot a game-high 36 points but it wasn’t enough as Canada’s women’s national team lost 87-80 to Japan at the FIBA under-17 world championships on Saturday in Roulez, France.

The Canadians were down 18 points heading into the final period and outscored the Japanese 26-15 in the fourth.

Fields went 15-of-26 from the field and also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Hamilton’s Karly Roser added 14 points for Canada.

Moeko Nagaoka had 34 points and 11 rebounds for Japan while Yuki Miyazawa had 27 points and a game-high 13 boards.

Canada and Japan are both 1-1 in Group A.
