Canadian shooting guard Brady Heslip (Burlington, Ont.) has inked a non-guaranteed training camp deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Heslip a 6’2 sharp-shooter who originally committed to the Guelph Gryphons of the CIS went undrafted at the 2014 NBA’s annual pickings event but found himself playing with the Timberwolves during Summer League. The former Baylor Bears guard averaged 6.2 points per game in five games earning two starts in the process. Heslip continued his productive summer with another outstanding showing with the Canadian Senior Men’s National Team leading the team in scoring on four occasions (18 vs Serbia, 18 vs. Croatia, 14 vs. Georgia, 22 vs. Angola) during their 2014 eleven-game European Tour.
After a stellar senior high-school career with the Nelson Lords, Heslip hoped to follow in the footsteps of his father Tom Heslip who became an All-Canadian at Guelph by giving HIS commitment to longtime CIS head coach Chris O’Rourke of the Guelph Gyphons in early 2009. That summer Heslip hit the AAU circuit and his sharpshooting ways caught the eyes of NCAA scouts and he ended up at Boston College before transferring to the Baylor Bears for three successful seasons.
Heslip ranks at the top of the Baylor Bears record book for best career three-point percentage with a solid 42.1% and also won the 2014 NCAA official 3-point contest following the Bears sweet-16 exit against the Wisconsin Badgers. The Timberwolves which acquired fellow Canadians Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett were at the bottom of the league and in three-point shooting at just 34.1% and will be looking to see if Heslip can help them improve those numbers.
