2013 CIS Final 8: #7 Lakehead Thunderwolves survive #3 Ottawa Gees to reach National championship game

OTTAWA, ON (BasketballBuzz) – In a battle between two familiar Ontario University Sport (OUA) opponents the #7 Lakehead Thunderwolves produced a game-changing 11-0 run in the late stages of the fourth quarter to beat the #3 Ottawa Gee-Gees 66-62 and earn a trip to the 2013 CIS Men’s National Championship game at ScotiaBank place.

With Ottawa leading 53-49 with six minutes Lakehead’s senior guard Joseph Jones (Washington DC) buried consecutive three-pointers to swing the momentum in favor of the Thunderwolves and then Ottawa native Greg Carter followed-up with his own three-point play to give Lakehead a 60-53 cushion.

Jones finished with a game-high 24 points including some clutch free-throws (9-of-11) to end the hopes of an all Ottawa final.

Gee-Gees second-team All-Canadian Warren Ward paced Ottawa with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

The Thunderwolves move on the the 2013 CIS Men’s Final 8 championship for the third time ever in school history and will face the winner of the second national semi-final between the #1 Carleton Ravens and #5 Acadia Axemen.

Lakehead also made it to national championship back in 1973 and 1977 but have failed to win the big prize.
