Seattle’s Space Needle.
Like the Empire State Building in New York City, or the Tokyo Tower in Japan’s capital, the Space Needle is synonymous with Seattle like rain, Frasier Crane…
…or the Seattle Storm basketball team.
Your four-time and current reigning WNBA champions fresh out the Wubble. Still doing it like Sue Bird straight out of her thirties, but back for her Brady and ‘Bron, or Taurasi like 20th campaign.
This isn’t 40. This is storied.
Yesterday, flying like a bird, Sue with fellow storming back-court teammate Jordin Canada climbed all the stories of Seattle’s Space Needle to raise and plant the flag for her formidable franchise and its future. The legend and the legacy about to be made.
You see as tried and tested as Bird and her side are it’s time for a brand-new day this upcoming season.
Waving the flag for the whole city to see from its sublime skyline the Seattle Storm launched their new logo for their WNBA title defence that looks as good as its guards. Featuring the city that gave us the first Starbucks and the Pike Place Market’s iconic needle, this logo is truly a landmark for a team of powerful women shooting for the stars.
One that features new faces like All-star Candice Dupree and 2019 first-round draft choice Katie Lou Samuelsen working their way into the rotation for this new look.
The logo takes shape and inspiration from the Pacific Northwest’s Mount Rainier that you can see from Space. The mountain featured heavily on the teams last crest, but does more subtly so here. Bordering the ribs and design of a team whose first icon looked a lot like the legendary former Seattle Supersonics NBA big brother that featured the Glove and Reignman of Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp.
But this is Seattle’s basketball team now, complete with the storming, thunderous power of a logo lightning bolt to go with their updated primary colors of lightning yellow, thunder and a brighter bolt green.
Almost as bright as what’s coming next.
Reigning Finals MVP Breanna Stewart, the re-signed Sue and future of Canada will play and look the part as they tip-off this new season on-court surrounded by the paint of this new logo that’s about to etch their new chapter of history.
Now, you just know from the vantage point of the Space Needle when it comes to Seattle you should prepare for reign.
Better bring an umbrella.
