Canada Basketball has officially announced the roster of eighteen players who will take part in the upcoming training camp for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Headlining the list are 2023 NBA champion Jamal Murray, first-team All-NBA guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and New York Knicks starting forward RJ Barrett.
The trio comprised the top three leading Canadian scorers during the 2022-23 NBA season, with Gilgeous-Alexander averaging a career-high of 31.4 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.8 rebounds, while Murray contributed 20 points, 6.2 assists, and 4.0 rebounds, and Barrett recorded 19.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.8 assists.
Murray returns to the program for the first time since leading Canada to a silver medal at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.
The training camp roster includes 13 out of the 14 summer core players who committed to a three-year cycle, extending all the way through the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Due to injury, Khem Birch is the only summer core player who has not been invited. However, the other five players, Kevin Pangos, Kassius Robertson, Trae Bell-Haynes, and the Scrubb brothers, are mainstays in the winter core team that played a crucial role in Canada’s qualification to the World Cup with an impressive 11-1 record.
The compete list features ten NBA players, seven experienced FIBA veterans, and Zach Edey, the top collegiate NCAA basketball player last season.
Edey, the 2023 Naismith Player of the Year, is the youngest invitee and the tallest player on the roster, while veteran Melvin Ejim, at 32 years old, is the oldest player at the training camp.
Team Canada will be coached by recently hired Spanish national and Sacramento Kings assistant coach Jordi Fernández. He will be joined on the bench by associate head coach Nate Bjorkgren and assistant coach Nathaniel Mitchell.
The 18-man roster and coaching staff will assemble in Toronto on July 31st and will open training camp at the OVO Center on August 1st, which will run until August 6th.
Following the seven-day evaluation period, the team will embark on a five-game exhibition series across Europe. From August 9th to 13th, they will participate in the 34th Basketball Supercup in Germany, playing three games against Germany, China, and New Zealand.
Canada will then travel to Spain for a two-game exhibition series against a tough Spanish team and resilient Dominican Republic on August 17th and 18th at the Palacio Municipal de Deportes de Granada.
Slotted in Group H, of the FIBA Baskeball World Cup 2023 hosted by the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia, No. 15 ranked Canada will face No. 5 ranked France on Friday, August 25th.
Two days later, on Sunday, August 27th, they will take on No. 43 Lebanon, and the group stage will conclude with a match against No. 29 Latvia on Tuesday, August 29th.
