For the first time in his career, Oklahoma City guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been announced as a starter for the 2024 NBA All-Star Game in Indianapolis.
Gilgeous-Alexander is the second Canadian to earn multiple All-Star Game selections and the third Canadian to be named a starter.
Steve Nash, a two-time MVP, was selected as a starter in 2006 and 2010 at the age of 35. Andrew Wiggins, a key player in the Golden State Warriors’ fifth championship win, was also named a starter in 2022.
The six-foot-six guard from Hamilton, Ontario, finished first in the player vote, third in the fan vote, and first in the media vote to secure his name in the Western Conference All-Stars’ starting five.
According to the current NBA All-Star voting process, fans account for 50% of the vote to decide All-Star starters, while NBA players and a media panel account for 25% each.
The Canadian guard received 3,130,850 fan votes, ranking third among Western Conference guards, behind Luka Dončić (4,141,533) and Stephen Curry (3,228,111).
Including Tyrese Haliburton of the Indiana Pacers, who received a total of 3,377,405 votes, the now two-time All-Star ranked fourth overall among guards and in the top ten among all players.
Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 31.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 6.4 assists, and 2.1 steals per game. He has scored 30-plus points in 32 of his 43 games this season and is shooting 54.6% from the field, the best among guards.
He is on pace to become only the third player in NBA history to average at least 30 points and two steals while shooting 50% or better from the field (joining Stephen Curry and Michael Jordan).

The 73rd edition of the NBA All-Star Game will take place on February 18 at 7 p.m. CT at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. It will showcase the traditional classic showdown between the Eastern and Western Conference, with a scoring system of four 12-minute quarters. This year, the game will return to its classic format, eliminating the experimental Elam ending and the captain player selection process.
