2020 WNBA Season Preview

2020 WNBA Season Preview - New York Liberty Sabrina Ionescu, Phoenix Mercury duo Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner and Seattle Storm legend Sue Bird - Illustrations Edilson J. Silva

In it for good, here at BasketballBuzz we’re all in the WNBA like the rolling Las Vegas Aces.

From Sabrina Ionescu to Sue Bird. Legends to legacy makers. Expect more than great like Charles Dickens in this tale of two leagues. The NBA may have started back up already as teams look to wrap it up in the bubble, resuming their on hiatus season after Adam Silver led the way in corona cancelling everything in this planets’ pandemic of social isolation and quarantined lock-down for COVID-19 in 2020, but co-existing in the same Disney World Florida bubble project the new WNBA season is about to pop.

Masking up for everyone from WNBA championing NBA legend Kobe Bryant and what would have been the next great of this game and his name in Gianna Bryant who tragically lost their lives amongst others in the January of this worst year for the world, to Breonna Taylor (say her name and arrest the cops that shot).

It was a all a dream for former Atlanta and now Las Vegas star Angel McCoughtry coming up aces. Now like the NBA courts reading ‘Black Lives Matter’ like they always should, every WNBA jersey in social statement like their band of brothers cross-court will carry Breonna’s name until social justice is done.

Like Maya Moore sitting out two straight seasons to get Jonathan Irons out from behind bars many players will be making a stand by sitting out this season, some for obvious health reasons too. A lot will be missing from this WNBA season like fans in the stands packed to the Pat Rafter’s, but there will be a lot on offer for your Disney dollar too. Like Sabrina, making this arguably the most famous and maybe the best ever WNBA season yet. But who will come out on top of all these Mickey Mouse ears?

Eastern Conference

Atlanta Dream

Black Lives Matter…but apparently not to Kelly Loeffler, the Atlanta owner who needs to be Sterling removed like that job description name. It looks like it’s all a nightmare for the Dream now and even some new jerseys as hot as their Hawk co-city team can’t cover all that up.

The Dream are more than this however. After coming in one game away from the finals in 2018, to only winning eight last season for the leagues worst record and their second in history, the Dream needed to sleep. Kalani Brown, Courtney Williams and rookie Chennedy Carter are a big three for a new day, but if only Kelly could wake-up and see what’s really going on. The Dream lost an Angel and now they’re having a devil of a time with hell to pay.

Chicago Sky

(Left to Right) – Guard Stella Johnson and Forward Ruthy Hebard – Photo: Chicago Sky

With the Mambacita on Gabby Williams sneakers like a moving mural the Sky is the limit for Chicago. From Courtney Vandersloot to Diamond DeShields this team has the names to make it happen when the one under theirs on the back of their jersey will be just as important, if not more for a city that wants to turn its back on gun violence like the system has apparently done to them.

Connecticut Sun

(Left to Right) – Alyssa Thomas, Jasmine Thomas and Dewanna Bonner – Photo: Connecticut Sun

The Sun doesn’t look to be setting on Connecticut anytime soon. They took the champion Mystics to a full five, this time last year in the WNBA Finals and then revamped their roster short of a reboot. It’s also going to be tough without MVP candidate Jonquel Jones, opting out of this season like a free-agent, but the rain isn’t coming in just yet. DeWanna Bonner will step it up in her absence after coming to the Sun from the Sun’s sister team the Phoenix Mercury. Expect this team to rise even if in the end they’ll set again like just another day.

Indiana Fever

(Left to Right) – Stephanie Mavunga, Natalie Anchowa, Kelsey Mitchell, Candice Dupree – Photo: Indiana Fever

Indiana will give you the right kind of fever this summer, keeping up pace with the rest of the association. Drafting Lauren Cox with the third pick that is set to make the earth sick like, “M.J. fade-away perfect.” The blueprint of the future. Indiana have also added Julie Allemand and Bernadett Határ and Victoria Vivians is back from last years’ injury. Kelsey Mitchell and Candice Dupree lead a strong squad, but it’s going to take more than a strong Fever to get out this beast of an East.

New York Liberty

(Left to Right) – Sabrina Ionescu, Amanda Zahui B, Canadian WNBA All-star Kia Nurse: Photo: New York Liberty

Sabrina, Sabrina, Sabrina. Its all about Rookie of the Year (already…for sure, no doubt) Ionescu in the core of Big Apple basketball. New York hoops hasn’t been this excited since Kobe laced ’em up at the Rucker.

From the Knicks to the new Durant and Irving Brooklyn Nets, everyone in the worlds most famous city is watching the one with “Mamba Mentality” do it for what could have been with GiGi. She’s gotta have it and Spike Lee will sit courtside in the summer like a deck chair in the Do The Right Thing. Sabrina could be an MVP in year one too. How about a champion? Now if Canadian Kia Nurse, Asia Durr and the rest of the statue strong squad can carry the torch it’ll be Liberty for all like hopefully one day justice will be.

Washington Mystics

(Left to Right) – Kiara Leslie, Tianna Hawkins, Leilani Mitchell, Ariel Atkins, Myisha Hines Allen – Photo: Washington Mystics

The reigning champion couldn’t get much better. Elena Delle Donne deserves better. No not from her team, but the actual association itself, which despite all its great experts is set to lead the league in disappointment if they can’t turn this around. Delle Donne took to The Players Tribune like ‘Dear Basketball’ to express her disheartened dissatisfaction with the league of the game she loves as the WNBA rejected the legends request to be medically exempt from this campaign due to her suffering from Lyme Disease and what catching Coronavirus could do to those elevated risks.

Despite the association, the Mystics franchise have now announced they’ll pay Elena either way, play or stay home. Sure like Maya Moore out of Minnesota, without her the Mystics chances of repeating is mystifying, but one repeat we don’t want is a second wave or someone with health problems facing this viral virus. Besides this team won the league last season and this one Elena Delle Donne is still a part of it, but even if she is apart from it, big names like Meesseman and Powers still have that. Time for another spell like the Wizards, or standing with their band of D.C. brothers up for social justice…or one of their own.

Western Conference

Dallas Wings

(Left to Right) – Kayla Thornton, Allisha Gray, Moriah Jefferson, Isabelle Harrison – Photo: Dallas Wings

After leaving Tulsa in a shock, Dallas lost Diggins-Smith like Dirk to Phoenix this off-season like Nowitzki’s old friend Steve Nash. Forming a deadly, dynamic duo with Diana. The Wings still have sauce with the likes of Arike Ogunbowale and Satou Sabally…it’s just going to take a little longer to cook. Still, that always makes things taste better in the end. That’s just the Texan barbecue. Simply put this is a rebuild, but Dallas has the blocks like Duplo.

Las Vegas Aces

Las Vegas Aces Forward and Two-time Olympian Angel Mccoughtry – Photo: WNBA

Sin City’s dames to kill for, the WNBA’s newest team really is rolling out all the chips. The Las Vegas Aces really pass the test and their a few cards away from having a decent hand at winning big. It’s all about how they play it. Big center Liz Cambridge really is one of the WNBA’s biggest and best players set to take over Delle Donne one day done. Whilst Kelsey Plum has got next and no longer, “but not yet.” Still, when it comes to the amazing A’ja Wilson. Like her ‘Dear Black Girls’ powerful Players Tribune piece, she is the Aces ace in the hole. Call it.

Los Angeles Sparks

Chelsea Gray, Nneka Ogwumike, Candace Parker, Seimone Augustus – Photo: Los Angeles Sparks

Two Ogwumike’s are better than one, but with Chiney sitting out this season and making ESPN Radio history and voices of black women heard, at least the Sparks have sister act and MVP Nneka still running the show. Adding legend Seimone Augustus, Brittney Sykes, German big Marie Gülich and Reshanda Gray to downtown gunner Chelsea Gray’s return makes this team that also lost the retired clutch great Alana Beard as deep as the abyss Method Man talked about, or that long range game.

Los Angeles Basketball sounds as gold good as the saxophone song of the same name from Haim for these women in Basketball. Now if analyst Candace Parker can get into that Kobe Mamba Mentality for Coach Derek Fisher’s purple and gold then every other team will be left go fishing as she sinks it all. The Spark that lights the fire.

Minnesota Lynx

(Left to Right) – Forward Napheesa Collier And Center Sylvia Fowles – Minnesota Lynx

The Minnesota Lynx are about to be sold…but never sold out. Sure this is the second straight season one of the best in the association Maya Moore will be sitting out and the team just lost their other legend, Seimone Augustus to the Sparks of all teams. Yet, still these Lynx roar louder than a Towns Timberwolf with D-Lo ice in its veins. That’s because Sylvia Fowles is leading the way in everyone else’s absence with K.G. passion.

The big ticket here however is what Maya Moore did for Jonathan Irons whilst sacrificing two of the best years of her career like Muhammad Ali for social justice. More than her name and more than a game, Maya put it all on the line so Irons could walk free from an unfair conviction barely it of childhood and behind bars, tried and sentenced as an adult without evidence to warrant the case, let alone the imprisonment.

Jonathan walked free and back to his family last month and some may say Moore could come back now, but this isn’t what this is all about right now. It’s all about social justice like arrest the cops that killed Breonna Taylor. You best believe too when Maya Moore does come back next season she’ll be more than an athlete, but one of the greatest ones of all-time regardless of the game or gender. Or whether she’s making history changing moves on court…or off it again.

Phoenix Mercury

Skylar Diggins-Smith joins Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner to form a big three – Photo: Phoenix Mercury

Mercury really is rising like a 90’s Bruce Willis Hollywood action thriller or the order of another Phoenix metaphor from the flames. So cold and hot, the G.O.A.T Diana Taurasi still great like Kobe and big superstar Brittney Griner already had it on lock for one of the ‘Expect Great’s’ greatest, but now adding the best young superstar since Candace Parker in Skylar Diggins-Smith (who played through pregnancy for all you men calling foul on the fact that this league is tougher than the rest like Springsteen) to this big holy trinity, like Jadakiss once rapped, “if I say so myself that’s a wonderful three,” like he was watching Steph Curry with the shot. This trio could put up Devin Booker 70 numbers for the other purple and white together. Scorching like the Suns, this Mercury will rock you.

Seattle Storm

(Left to Right) – Dynamic duo young of Natasha Howard and Jordin Canada – Photo: Seattle Storm

There’s still a Storm coming…even throughout all these Sonicless in Seattle years. Just like Breanna Stewart pumped up Joe Budden after the New Jersey rapper tweeted that, “Seattle deserves a Basketball team” after watching the Michael Jordan vs. Gary Payton trash-talking episode of ‘The Last Dance’.

“We already have one” (focus Joey) she replied…and what a one they have. Almost making you forget about the Sonics’ like Nintendo, although this team deserves another franchise like the Grant Goldberg designed unis (and how about the viral sensations WNBA mock ups?).

Stewie and Suey represent a Lisa Leslie and Candace Parker Los Angeles like legend and legacy making duo. Just like the best Bird in green with the three since the legend of Larry does a veteran, legend superstar one with fellow conference contender Taurasi like a Laker legend of Kobe and LeBron playing through father-time like pushing your achillies back further than your hairline (I know the latter pain).

Alysha Clark, Lauren Jackson, Jewell Loyd and Jordin Canada gives this roster more names than the Change application signing up for bringing the Sonics back to Seattle like a ‘Frasier’ reunion. Word to Niles Crane hitting it from half-court. Seattle are about to reign like Kemp.
