#12 Rejean Chabot – Saskatchewan Huskies – CW
Make that 4 straight games of 25-plus points for Rejean Chabot. He exploited a weak Winnipeg Wesmen squad by scoring a total of 63 points in 2 games. The Huskies who struggled early in the season have found their scoring touch and Chabot is a major reason current success. On Friday, he played only 29 minutes but managed to put up 27 points (11/16 FG, 1/4 3FG, 4/5 FT) assist on 4 baskets and pull down 4 rebounds as the Huskies cruised to a 99-48 victory. Saturday night was a similar scenario, in 27 minutes of action, Chabot dominated again, this time around erupting for 36 points (14/18 FG, 3/4 3FG, 5/5 FT) 5 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steals.
#6 Jacob Doerksen – Trinity Western – CW
Jacob Doerksen showed why he should be considered a serious candidate for CIS player of the year honors. Facing a hot and motivated Victoria Vikes squad which came into the weekend series against the Spartans at top of the Canada West standings, Doerksen’s versatility, efficiency and knack for knocking down big shots were on full display as the former CIS Rookie and Player of the Year notched 23 points (10/13 FG, 1/2 3FG, 2/2 FT), 6 rebounds and 4 assists. His 25 points (9/17 FG, 2/5 3FG, 5/5 FT), 6 rebounds, 2 assists helped complete the weekend sweep and improve the Spartans winning streak to six straight and tied for first place in Canada West.
#22 Alex Hill – Toronto Blues – OUA
The Toronto Blues are averaging 82 points per game, good enough for 7th in the nation. A major part of their success has been 6-foot-4, 200-pound combo guard Alex Hill who leads the team in scoring at 18 points per game. The former Cornell University transfer is flourishing under long time head coach Mike Katz system. Hill’s double-double of 17 points (6/12 FG, 2/6 3FG, 3/4 FT) 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals were enough to help the Blues pick-up a Friday night road win 96-86 against the scrappy Brock Badgers. To wrap up the weekend the Blues defeated the Guelph Gryphons 86-70 and the former Eastern Commerce HS product knocked down 5 three-pointers on his way to a game high 27 points (9/14 FG, 5/8 3FG, 4/6 FT) and 3 rebounds. The Blues record now sits at 5-1, trailing only the Carleton Ravens.
#5 Josh Whyte – UBC Thunderbirds – CW
Josh Whyte is an expectational point guard, he has the ability to impact a game in multiple ways. On most nights he’s flirting with a triple-double will keeping his turnovers under control. Friday, he padded-up the stats sheet with 21 points (9/13 FG, 2/4 3FG, 1/1 FT), 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 helpers. On Saturday he again proved difficult to contain off the dribble, his height advantage and ability to get to the rack earned him 20 points (8/13 FG, 3/6 3FG, 1/2 FT) 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Thunderbirds beat the Fraser Valley Cascades 84-68, 92-86 and are currently soaring on a 4-game winning streak. Their 8-2 record is tied with TWU for top honors on the Canada West standings.
#32 Jimmy Dorsey – Cape Breton Capers – AUS
Third-year guard Jimmy Dorsey averages of 15 points per contest, 4 assists, 3 steals are a team best. His near double-double of 15 points (5/11 FG, 3/7 3FG, 2/3 FT) 9 assists, 3 rebounds, 5 steals helped seal a Friday night victory 83-71 over the Acadia Axemen. In a much closer contest, Dorsey used his quickness to lead his team in scoring with 20 points (6/11 FG, 4/7 3FG, 4/6 FT) 6 rebounds and 6 steals as the Capers rolled their winning streak to six straight, sweeping the weekend series against the Axemen. Cape Breton is a serious threat to represent the AUS at the Final 8 in Halifax.
