Weekly Top 5: Ravens Tyson Hinz showing flashes of brilliance

After a month-long hiatus, the CIS Men’s Basketball regular season resumed with plenty of sizzling action and great individuals performances. Take a look at Top 5 performers for the week of January 5-9 2011.

#5 Joey Haywood – Saint Mary’s Huskies – AUS

If you haven’t seen Joey Haywood play, do yourself a favour and catch a Saint Mary’s Huskies game. The nation’s leading scorer went bonkers on the 1-6 UPEI Panthers his near triple-double of 46 points, (17/28 FG, 4/10 3FG, 8/9 FT) 12 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 steals rank amongst the best performances in CIS basketball history. He also added added 23 points, (8/21 FG, 0/5 3FG, 7/910 FT) 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists in a 91-81 loss to the Acadia Axemen.

The Huskies continue to have a disappointing regular season with a current conference record of 3-6, but as long as Joey Haywood is in the line-up they are a threat to upset a few of the top teams in the AUS. Interesting fact, all of Saint Mary’s six conference losses have come by 10 points or fewer.

#42 Tyson Hinz – Carleton Ravens – OUA

The Carleton Ravens are still undefeated in OUA league play (10-0) and against Canadian teams. Much of the Ravens’ early success can be attributed to a strong team effort, a relentless coach and Tyson Hinz, a hybrid forward who is starting to draw-up similar comparisons to former Ravens standout and Canadian National Team member Aaron Doornekamp.

On Saturday night in a much anticipated match-up against a talented Toronto Blues front-line, Hinz went to work putting up a game-high 29 points (10/17 FG, 1/3 3FG, 8/10 FT) including 13 rebounds and 4 assists in 27 minutes of action.

23 of those points came in the first half where Tyson was absolutely dominant, showing an impressive back to the basket game, while beating the bigger and slower Varsity Blues bigs for multiple three-point plays. Hinz’s performance on Friday night against the 2-8 Ryerson Rams was as equally impressive, 28 points (10/14 FG, 1/1 3FG, 7/7 FT) including 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

#22 Jerome Turcotte-Routhier – Laval Rouge et Or – RESQ

Jerome Turcotte- Routhier showed no ill effects despite an ankle injury that kept him out of action at the 20th Annual Rod Shoveller memorial tournament, where the Rouge et Or struggled mightily.

In a match-up of the two top teams in the RESQ conference, Turcotte-Routhier and his Laval squad avenged an earlier lose to the Stingers.

His 24 points, (8/15 FG, 3/7 3FG, 5/9 FT) 9 rebounds and 6 assists propelled Laval to an 86-76 victory and first place in the QSSF standings with a record of 5-1. Turcotte-Routhier is currently 6th in the nation in scoring at 21.8 points per game.

#5 Josh Whyte – UBC Thunderbirds – CW

You’ll be hard pressed to find another point guard in the CIS that has been as consistent and effective as Josh Whyte. The 5th year guard is averaging 19.9 points per game, shooting 56.6% from the field, 47.5% from beyond arc, 79.6% from the charity stripe to go along with 4.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists while leading his team to the top of the Canada West standings.

This weekend against the Manitoba Bisons he again showed why he should be a strong candidate for back to back player of the year awards. Friday night he dropped 28 points, (10/13 FG, 4/5 3FG, 4/4 FT) 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Saturday he was just as good with 24 points, (8/16 FG, 2/3 3FG, 6/6 FT) 3 rebounds, 3 assists.

#6 Jacob Doerksen – Trinity Western Spartans – CW

The beat goes on for Jacob Doerksen and TWU Spartans after earning two hard fought road victories over a feisty Victoria Vikes squad. On Friday he scored 23 points (7/13 FG, 2/4 3FG, 7/9 FT) grabbed 11 rebounds, added 3 assists and 3 steals as the Spartans defeated the Vikes 86-84.

Saturday was a similar story, his game high 27 points, (10/18 FG, 0/2 3FG, 7/10 FT) along with 7 rebounds and 3 steals helped the Spartans run their current winning streak to 12 games, their last defeat was on October 30th 2010.

After 16 Canada West conference games, Doerksen ranks at the top in the following categories, field goal %, offensive rebounds and total points scored. The race for CIS player of the year clearly will include Jacob Doerksen’s name.

#05 Yoosrie Salhia – Lakehead Thunderwolves – OUA

On Friday he put together a complete game scoring 25 points (9/12 FG, 1/1 3FG, 6/11 FT) grabbed 12 rebounds and added 4 blocks. On Saturday he added another double-double with 11 points, (4/6 FG, 3/5 FT) 13 rebounds and 3 assists. The Thunderwolves only two losses have come at the hands of the Toronto Blues and Carleton Ravens.

#9 Cam McIntrye – Waterloo Warriors – OUA

Erupted for 38 points (12/22 FG, 4/8 3FG, 10/14 FT) and 3 assists in a key 90-89 victory against divisional foes Brock Badgers. Cooled off by slightly in a 114-82 drumming by the upstart Laurier Golden Hawks, still managed 25 points (9/16 FG, 5/10 3FG, 2/2 FT) and 3 rebounds.
