Hi, what are you looking for?

WNBA

The New York Liberty’s first WNBA championship is for all

After 28 years in the concrete jungle, dreams are finally made of this.

Exhausted emotion in dear devotion.

This is basketball at its most beautiful: Sabrina Ionescu lying on the floor with her face in her hands, following a hard-fought Game 5 overtime. But they’re tears of joy, not defeat, as the New York Liberty win their first WNBA championship after 28 years in the W.

Banking it at Barclays for Brooklyn’s first major championship since the Jackie Robinson Dodgers of the fifties. For each and every brownstone home, on that gorgeous grey floor with crown accents.

It’s like the Empire State’s own Alicia Keys put it in her Liberty promo: ‘New York ain’t for everybody!’

But they are for the ‘chip.

Something even the New York Knicks haven’t achieved (yet, they have one heck of a team now) since 1973. With Spike Lee and everyone from the five boroughs in attendance, New York brought it home.

How can you not like it? Putting a ring on the Statue of Liberty’s finger as they take the crown.

Since defeating the Las Vegas Aces, as they did in the 2023 Commissioner’s Cup, in the semis, many thought the WNBA Finals would be a layup for the Liberty.

Did they forget how KG legendary the Minnesota Lynx are? From G.O.A.T defender Sylvia Fowles to new Hall of Famer Seimone Augustus, to Maya Moore and so much more.

Like Napheesa Collier, one of the greatest in the game, shot-gunner Courtney Williams, and Canadian Bridget Carleton, shooting the lights out. The Lynx know how to put on a clinic, much like their Mayo sponsors.

Yet the Liberty have a super-team. Not just a hero of an elephant mascot in their trunk.

Stamp it!

Ever since Breanna Stewart revealed the Statue of Liberty emoji on social media, NYL have been a lot for the Aces to handle, not to mention the rest of the league.

Now they’re holding all the cards. Star Sabrina is hitting all the big shots. All-WNBA star starter Jonquel Jones, leading the city with 17 points in the final game.

With championship rings to accompany those Paris 2024 Olympic gold medals, you know who’s carrying the torch now, keeping the flame lit for the city that never sleeps.

Minnesota forced the full five of the series before New York won after losing their first five finals. Although it did take an extra five minutes. Going the distance, the liberated Liberty can breathe a sigh of relief now, but how about a real rematch?

The Twin Cities are still looking for a record five championships, tying both the Seattle Storm and the former Houston Comets with four. You’d better believe the Lynx are built for it.

We can’t wait to see this thing go seven games next season.

The iconic New York Liberty Victory jersey has “Equality” proudly displayed across the chest. This win in the epic Explorer edition truly was for everyone.

Light it up like the Empire State Building in emerald green.

Everyone who doesn’t watch women’s sports is envious.

But you’re welcome now…with a capital W.
