Road to Final 8: Cascades fire back tie Canada West best-of-3 quarter-finals series

The #2 Fraser Valley Cascades fired back with a solid defensive effort to the defeat the #3 Lethbridge Pronghorns 74-66 and tie the 2012 Canada West best-of-three quarter series at 1-1 and force a decisive game-three tomorrow night at the Envision Centre in Abbotsford, BC.

Cascades 6’7″ third-year forward Jasper Moedt put the finishing touches on a fine evening with six straight points in the late stages of the game and finished with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Joel Friesen rebounded from a poor first-game with 12 points and 10 rebounds to help UFV win the rebound battle for the second night in row with 54-38 margin.

Lethbridge got a double-double from Dominyc Coward with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Guard Daryly Cooper added 13 points but was held in check with a 1-9 shooting performance.

The Pronghorns missed the interior presence of 6’7 Forward Derek Waldner (DeWinton, AB), who battled foul-trouble and fouled out with a 11 points (8 in the first quarter) and good for 5-of-5 from the inside and 1-of-1 from the charity stripe.

Similar to last-night, game-two had all the ingredients of a quality playoff series with the first quarter finishing 16-14 in favor UFV.

Dominyc Coward wrapped-up an 11-point second-quarter with a layup with three-seconds remaining to send Pronghorns ahead 36-34 at the end of the first-half.

The Pronghorns came-out of the locker-room with more energy and took a 40-36 lead in the opening minutes of the second-half, only to see the Cascades fire-back with a 18-5 run that featured five-straight made three-pointers and 54-45 lead at the end of three.

Lethbridge quickly cut in the Cascades lead in the final 10 minutes and Tyson Mcintyre inside scoop turned the game into a two-point contest at 56-54 with under seven minutes remaining.
