In a thrilling season filled with highs and lows, Ryan Nembhard, the standout point guard for the Gonzaga Bulldogs, has solidified his place in both the Canadian and Gonzaga NCAA record books with his remarkable performance.

Playing the best basketball of his career, the six-foot junior guard entered the 2024 West Coast Conference (WCC) championship tournament on a hot streak. Shredding defences with precision passes, he recorded five or more assists in eleven consecutive games.

Leading Gonzaga into the WCC championship game, where they aimed to extend their four-year stranglehold on the conference title, Nembhard delivered his third straight double-double and fifth in the last eight games.

Finishing the night with 13 points and 11 assists, despite falling short with a 69-60 score to the Saint Mary’s Gaels, this remarkable performance pushed Nembhard’s total assists for the year to 215 in 32 games.

Surpassing five-foot-nine American-born and former Canadian national team member Ronn McMahon’s 35-year-old record of 207 assists in 30 games as a junior for Eastern Washington during the 1988-1989 season.

Nembhard becomes just the third Canadian player to reach 200+ assists in a single NCAA Division I season. He’s also closing in on McMahon’s 6.9 assists per game average that has also stood the test of time.

Marcus Carr, the current all-time Canadian NCAA assists leader, recorded 203 assists in 31 games during his sophomore year in 2019-20 with the Minnesota Gophers.

Additionally, Nembhard’s achievement moves him into third all-time in Gonzaga’s history for single-season assists, trailing only Josh Perkins (234) and Matt Santangelo (225), thus solidifying his place among the program’s elite in just one year.

On his climb to the top of one of the greatest single-season assist marks, Nembhard surpassed a host of Canadian and Gonzaga household names, including Hall of Famer John Stockton, who had 201 assists in 28 games. His own brother Andrew recorded 194 assists in his freshman season and 184 in his senior campaign with the Bulldogs. Additionally, Kevin Pangos closed his career with 181 assists in 38 games.

As the spotlight shifts to the impending NCAA March Madness tournament and the Bulldogs gear up for their 25th straight trip to the Big Dance, Nembhard will have the opportunity to push his name further atop the list of elite single-season passers. Currently, Avery Johnson holds the top spot with 339 assists in the 1987-1988 season.

In three seasons of NCAA Division I college basketball, the younger Nembhard has amassed 510 assists in 96 career games, the same amount former Santa Clara legend Steve Nash had in 113 games.

Already firmly established as a top ten all-time Canadian NCAA assists leader, with two potential years of eligibility remaining including a senior and a possible COVID-extended year, Nembhard has the opportunity to further solidify his legacy as one of the most prolific passers in Canadian basketball history.
