Ottawa, ON (BasketballBuzz) — The #5 seeded Acadia Axemen rode the hot shooting hand of sophomore guard Tyler Scott to defeat the UBC Thunderbirds 89-80 in a high scoring affair to advance to the 2013 CIS men’s national semi-final on Saturday.
Scott (Halifax, Nova Scotia) finished with a game-high 29 points, including an unconscious 7-for-8 from downtown. Acadia’s All-Canadian forward Owen Klassen got the party started for the Axemen in the middle of the third quarter by throwing down a massive two-hand slam on UBC freshmen Conor Morgan.
Klassen finished with 15 points and four rebounds. Other Axemen in double figures included Anthony Ashe Anthony Sears with 14 and 10 points respectively.
Fifth-year guard O’Brian Wallace paced UBC Thunderbirds with 24 points including his own six three-pointers to keep the Canada West champions in the game. Transfer Brylle Kamen also played well for the T-Birds with 16 points and six rebounds.
The game was mildly interrupted with 3:32 remaining and Acadia leading 82-72 as UBC Thunderbirds captain Doug Plumb was taken out on a stretcher after suffering a concussion.
The Thunderbirds once again fail to advance past the quarter-finals and will play in the consolation side of the bracket.
Acadia advances to play the winner of #1 Carleton Ravens versus #8 Victoria Vikes.
