Calgary Dinos looking to bring 2017 CIS Final 8 basketball to the West Coast

The CIS Final 8 Men’s Basketball Championships could be on the move again.

The Calgary Dinos athletic administration is said to be in the preliminary stages of gathering key information and potentially putting forth a bid to bring the 2017 CIS men’s national basketball championships to the West Coast.

The Dinos will host this year’s CIS women’s Final 8 Championships, as well as the 2013 edition.

The men’s Final 8 will once again return to the Metro Centre in Halifax for 2012. The tournament will then move back to Ottawa (2013, 2014), as the Ravens will get two cracks at national glory on home soil.

Calgary University is exploring options on how it would come up with the $250, 000.00 price tag that comes in just securing the hosting rights.

Halifax has had a strangle hold on the coveted event for many years and will surely be in the mix to host the event after it concludes its two year term in the Nations Capital.

The University of Calgary is home to some of the finest athletic facilities in Canada thanks to the legacy of the XV Olympic Winter Games in 1988.

The Dinos call Jack Simpson Gymnasium aka the “Jack” home, a venue that first opened in 1987 and seats 3500 people.

Other venues could include the Scotiabank Saddledome, home of the NHL’s Calgary Flames, it has a seating capacity for 19,289 people.

The Dinos are coming off of a poor 10-20 season that ended at the hands of the Saskatchewan Huskies in Canada West playoff play.
