City of Windsor awarded NBL Canada expansion franchise

It’s official, the city of Windsor has been award an NBL Canada franchise.

The National Basketball League of Canada will kick off its second season with eight teams, after its inaugural campaign was only made-up of only seven franchises.

The league had ambitions of adding several franchises after multiple ownership groups expressed interest in Ottawa, Kingston, Kitchener amongst others.

The official announcement should come next week at the annual owner’s meeting in Toronto.

Windsor, Ontario is considered a top ten Canadian basketball market and boasts a strong basketball community with several recognizable high schools, CCAA/OCAA teams and the Windsor Lancers.

Windsor is also very close to Detroit, the hometown of Andre Levingston, the current Halifax Rainmen owner, and one of the original founders of the Canada’s newest latest semi-pro league.
